Friends… more than just a sitcom.

Lots of booksKieran’s notes from the back room :  Boy-oh-boy what an exciting week!  Yet again we have rearranged a few of the areas in the library, and I have been watching folks come in, go to where the big art books used to be and find video games.  Luckily, with a quick glance over their left shoulder, they see the section where they wanted to be – the over-sized books – now located back near the Science Fiction section and free book shelf.  I joke that we change things so much so that we can watch you look around in confusion, but actually we change things around so that we can cram in more new books and things into our little library.  (My next plan is to hang things from the ceiling, but the boss thinks it might not be an OSHA approved idea…)   While rearranging can gain some space (inches – but inches are important!), we also have other ideas in the works.  Unfortunately, those ideas cost money.  Fortunately, we have a group of people helping us raise money – the Friends of the John C. Fremont Library.  (Gosh, I like having Friends!)  Now, I know what you are thinking, “Friends?  The library has friends… I want to be a friend.  I don’t mind helping out occasionally… as long as they don’t make me attend meetings…” or perhaps, “Friends? Hmm.. I would LOVE to attend meetings, I have lots of ideas and organizational skills!” or even, “What’s in it for me?”.  (I will start with the easily delineated rewards and build to the philosophical)  You get half price copies, laminating, and faxing, PLUS no late fees on printed material (so, yeah, you will still have to pay DVD late fees, but the cookbook you checked out…).  Friends get to help out at the book sale (which is in front of the old Oasis on  Saturday Feb. 13th from 10am to 2 pm).  Friends sleep better at night knowing they have helped play an important role in creating a system of access to information in our area…. yeah, well, you get the point.  The front desk will help you become a Friend of our library and when they are done with you, sneak on back to the back room and we can talk about freedom of information in Fremont County and beyond, or the nature of friendship or ideas you might have about making the library larger.
